Napoleon created the 2nd École Polytechnique from the campuses of le collège de Navarre and le collège de Boncourt. Le collège de Navarre was founded in 1304 by Jeanne de Navarre; le collège de Boncourt was founded in 1353 by Pierre Becoud. Also included in the assemblage of colleges taken over by the École Polytechnique was the College of Tournai (not identified in the Turgot Plan; it was located on Montagne Sainte Genevieve), which was founded in 1353 and was itself taken over by le collège de Navarre. The original buildings were demolished and replaced one after another as the École Polytechnique was constructed. Napoleon established the École originally as a military academy and gave it the motto, "Pour la patrie, les sciences et la gloire" ("For the country, the science, and the glory").
